Debt buyer and collection agency
Midland Credit Management on your credit report
Midland Credit Management is a debt buyer and collection agency. On a credit report it can also appear as Midland Funding LLC, MCM, Encore Capital Group. You have the right to ask it to validate a debt, and to dispute anything on your credit report that is inaccurate.
Who Midland Credit Management is
Midland Credit Management (MCM) collects accounts that were sold to the Encore Capital Group companies, which Encore lists as Atlantic Credit & Finance, Midland Funding and Midland Credit Management. Its site explains that MCM shows up because one of your accounts was sold to it. MCM says it has worked with more than 7 million consumers and has operated since 1953.
How its accounts show on your credit report
MCM states that if an account is paid or settled in full after it starts reporting, it will request deletion of its tradeline once the payment is processed, which it says typically takes up to 45 days. Without a policy like this, a paid collection updates to a zero balance and stays until its 7-year date. The deletion covers MCM's entry only, not the original creditor's charge-off.

How to ask Midland Credit Management to validate a debt
MCM's site lists P.O. Box 939069, San Diego, California 92193 and (800) 296-2657, and it takes formal credit reporting disputes through its online Consumer Resolution Center. For a validation request, send it in writing to the dispute address on MCM's validation notice before the validation period end date shown there.
Ask within 30 days of the first notice and the collector has to pause collecting until it sends verification. The letter builder writes a validation request for free.
What to do if this name is on your report
- Pull all three reports. Get them free at AnnualCreditReport.com and find the account, its balance and its date of first delinquency.
- Check the dates and the amount. A collection can report for 7 years from the original delinquency, not from when the collector bought it. A newer date can mean re-aging.
- Ask for validation if you don't recognize it. Send the request in writing and keep a copy.
- Dispute what is wrong. Dispute with each bureau that shows an inaccurate item, and with the collector directly.
- Decide on payment with the facts in hand. Read should you pay a collection before you agree to anything.
