Credit bureau contacts: disputes, freezes and fraud alerts

The online, phone and mail contacts for each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, the specialty reporting companies, free reports and the prescreened-offer opt-out. Each one is linked to the page we took it from.

Every contact checked

Before you write or call

  • Each bureau keeps its own file. An error at one bureau may not appear at the others, so check all three reports and dispute with each bureau that shows it.
  • Online is fastest; mail leaves a paper trail. If you mail a dispute, send copies, never originals, and use certified mail with a return receipt so you can prove the date the clock started.
  • Freezes and fraud alerts are free at all three bureaus under federal law (15 U.S.C. 1681c-1). A freeze has to be placed at each bureau separately.
  • Need the letter? The free letter builder writes dispute, validation and identity theft letters you print and mail yourself.
