VantageScore reason code · Payment history
Too few accounts recently paid as agreed
Among accounts reported recently, too few show clean, on-time payment. Either the file has few active accounts, or a big share of them had recent lates.
VantageScore code numbers
| Where you see it | Code |

| VantageScore 4.0 | 08 |
| VantageScore 3.0, printed as "You have either too few loans or too many loans with recent delinquencies" | 08 |
Code numbers can differ by bureau and score version. The wording of the statement is what to match.
What puts this reason on your score
VantageScore's explanation says paying bills on time improves your score, and your file shows you haven't paid all or nearly all of them on time. The 3.0 statement with the same number spells out both causes: 'You have either too few loans or too many loans with recent delinquencies.' Some TransUnion 3.0 reports print 'very few' in place of 'too few.'
Two very different files get this code. One is thin, with two accounts and one recent late. The other is full, with ten accounts and four recent lates. In both, the share of recently reported accounts that are spotless is low.
What to check on your credit report
- How many open accounts reported in the last few months
- How many of those show a late mark in recent months
- Accounts you pay on time that don't report at all, which some small lenders don't
What you can do about it
- Pay every account on time from here on. The statement reads recent months, so it responds sooner than older payment codes.
- If the file is thin, one more account reported on time each month, such as a secured card, adds to the clean count.
- Use autopay for minimum payments to stop new lates.
How soon a change can show
Because the code reads recent behavior, each on-time month a lender reports helps. Most lenders report monthly, so it takes several clean cycles to move.
If you are applying for a mortgage
Underwriters pay close attention to the last 12 months of payments. If this code is on your list, the months between now and your application are where the work is.
